In 2024 we contracted with fly fishing filmmaker Robert Thompson (“The River” and “Night of the Hex”) to produce a documentary film capturing all that is our Michigan Trout Unlimited Youth Conservation and Trout Camp.  The result of this partnership is “Beyond the Stream: Michigan Trout Unlimited’s Youth Conservation and Trout Camp”, and will premiere April 2025.

“Beyond the Stream” captures the heart and soul of our youth camp: the generational connections formed between campers, new and experienced alike, and the volunteer counsellors, many of whom have been a part of camp from its earliest days.  Much like his film “The River”, Thompson is able to connect the viewer to the men and women, girls and boys that come together on the banks of the storied Au Sable River.  It’s a story that started many years ago with an idea and a mission, and “Beyond the Stream” offers both a heart-warming narrative as young people like Madeline, Ben, Cece and Lily find themselves and each other as they become immersed in fly fishing along the river upon which Trout Unlimited was founded, but also a hopeful glimpse into the future of cold water conservation as those same youth connect with TU volunteers like Greg, Lori and Jon.

We would love to have you join us at our April General Membership Meeting!

It will be held Thursday, April 17, 2024 from 6-9 PM, at The Fountains Event Center: 535 S. Riverview Dr., Parchment, MI 49004.

Membership Drive, Fly Tying, Swap Meet and Socializing event

$25, all attendees under 18 are free (open house style).  Appetizers will be provided and any patron attending that has never signed up for TU in the past will also get a TU membership (expiring members can also sign up).

Fly Tying with KVCTU

Bring your own equipment or use ours

Different stations will be specializing in a certain fly patterns (they will have materials needed to tie the fly they are presenting) or you can free tie and ask one of the many tying floaters for tips and tricks.

KVCTU Swap Meet

Folks are welcome to bring their old gear to sell, trade or barter.  We will provide garage sale tags to label items with owner and asking price.  Tables will be set up if patrons would like to display items but they will ultimately be responsible for their own items and transactions.  We will also have a table with just KVCTU items behind Char that will also be available for purchase.   

We will be handing out a TFO combo as a door prize!

Kalamazoo Valley Chapter Trout Unlimited (KVCTU) will be hosting Damsels Fly, a fly fishing class for women who are new to the sport on Saturday, May 3, 2025. The all-day course will be held at Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery Visitor Center in Mattawan. We’ll provide instruction in casting, gear, knots, fly tying, etiquette, bugs, safety, finding and reading the water, protecting our resources, and the TU mission. The class will be informative and fun, and hopefully give participants the confidence to get out on the water – and maybe get involved in chapter activities. Our thanks to our DNR partners at Wolf Lake, and to the many members helping out.

The following day, you’ll have the chance to get on-the-water experience on the Kalamazoo River in Battle Creek.

The cost is just $60, and includes lunch and lots of giveaways, along with expert instruction by many of TU’s best teachers. No equipment is necessary.
